1. About the SaferVPN (Overview)
SaferVPN is an Israel-based provider that claims to provide the “simplest and fastest” VPN service on the market.
Apart from being fast, it is also safe from hackers and snoopers, just like most VPN out there. It is an excellent provider for streaming videos using services like Netflix and Hulu.
It features an instant connection, unlimited content, and fast for online streaming, Hence, we can say it is a great choice for people who want to stream videos online. Unfortunately, it’s not so good for P2P.
This provider offers a special Business and Enterprise packages all for business purposes. Enterprise users gets to enjoy a special custom-made packages and cloud-based access.
It also offers an apps for all major and common platforms including a Chrome extension, that’s good right! especially good for novice users who don’t know how to use a VPN. SaferVPN also sells routers that has already been configured with the VPN settings.
It has a very high speed thus, making uploading and downloading of files so easy.
There are hackers who set up Wi-Fi hotspots near cafes and airports, SaferVPN can keep you protected from them. This VPN has about 700 servers in 34 countries, they might not have a pretty large network, but they are growing.
They have 24/7 customer support via LiveChat. They also have a ticketing system and are available on social media as well. They give an instant reply on chat within few minutes of messaging.
2. Compatible Devices
SaferVPN offers custom VPN apps for the most popular devices:
- Microsoft Windows
- Apple Mac OS
On SaferVPN’s website, you can also find loads of manual set-up guides for those devices without native apps such as Linux, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry.
SaferVPN allows you to connect with five devices at once which is a pretty standard number for most popular VPNs.
Games Consoles & Streaming Devices
SaferVPN doesn’t have any custom apps for streaming devices or game consoles, so if you want to use it on your Amazon Fire TV Stick or Xbox, you’ll need to manually configure your router.
This VPN gives a step-by-step instructions for setting up its VPN on your router, or you can buy one pre-configured one to avoid the stress of setting it up.
Once you set up your router with SaferVPN every internet-connected device in your home will be under it’s protection, including games consoles and all streaming devices.
As earlier said, SaferVPN offers browser extensions for not only Google Chrome but Mozilla Firefox, which can be installed in a blink of an eye.
These browser add-ons are included in the price of the paid subscriptions, but also available to free users (subject to a 500MB monthly data cap).
It is important to note that this extensions (both chrome and Mozilla) are proxies this means that they don’t create an encrypted VPN connection or have the advanced features just as the SaferVPN desktop client.
We don’t recommend using only these extensions as a complete substitute for the main SaferVPN app, Hence get the app.
3. Features of SaferVPN
SaferVPN offers the following additional features:
- 24/7 live chat support
- The automatic location selection algorithm
- Peer-to-peer (P2P) torrenting is permitted (Netherlands server only)
- WiFi protection
- Chrome extension
Servers are located around the world, with some in more unusual locations such as South Africa, Brazil, India, Australia, and New Zealand.
Automatic Location Selection Algorithm
This is a feature that SaferVPN appears very proud of:
“We have a diagnose fix feature that runs in the background and selects the best protocol to be used based on the system configuration. In most cases, we use IKEv2 over IPSEC (AES 256) and falling back to OpenVPN (AES 256).”
IKEv2 is widely regarded as a secure VPN protocol and is particularly excellent when regularly switching between mobile and WIFI, or even between different WiFi networks.
We also recommend OpenVPN, because it is the safest protocol currently and has proven a standard for keeping your data safe. If you prefer to stick with OpenVPN then it’s no big deal as Automatic Location Selection Algorithm is entirely optional.
4. Speed and Performance
Before I reveal my SaferVPN connection speed figures, I’d like to review how I determine the speed numbers.
All speed test was performed using a gigabit Ethernet connection located in the United States. We test by connecting to 3 different locations, The United Kingdom, the United States, and Hong Kong.
We perform the tests on 3 different days and at 3 different times of day: morning, midday and evening. We utilize each provider’s Windows app and connected via OpenVPN over UDP.
We found that the provider’s connections were more than up to anything we threw at them, with plenty of bandwidth for streaming video and online gaming. Their average download speed of 40.92 Mbps is one of the best speeds we’ve seen. To our greatest surprise even 4K HDR content began streaming quickly and played smoothly.
5. Price (Free or Paid version)
SaferVPN offers a different price for home and business users. For home users, there are three plans monthly, yearly, and two-yearly. We suggest choosing a two-year subscription if you need their cheapest option.
Though SaferVPN offers a monthly payment plan, after calculations and all choosing a longer-term plan is way cheaper.
There are a 24-hour free trial and 30-day money-back guarantee.
Business pricing is different. You need to pay $10 per member per month for a business account. SaferVPN provides an Enterprise plan for high-end organizations and offices that provides a secure package with cloud-based access.
The business accounts also come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. There are several payment options including credit cards, PayPal, Bitcoin, and others.
Since SaferVPN offers seasonal and other discounts, you can visit their website to check their current deals.
6. Privacy and Security
SaferVPN’s website clearly displays the company’s no-logging policy: “We never log or monitor your VPN network traffic. What you do online is your business and we aim to keep it that way!”
A ‘No Log’ page goes on to state that SaferVPN doesn’t log ‘your source IP address, your DNS queries, your VPN IP address, your personal data, your browsing history, your metadata.’
While that sounds good, it’s not as specific or clearly defined as we would like (what does this mean by ‘personal data’, ‘metadata’, what is logged?), and other elements of the print give a different picture.
For example, the ‘Unlawful Activity’ clause of the Terms of Service states that if you’ve violated SaferVPN’s rules, the company may disclose details “relating to your profile, email addresses, usage history, posted materials, IP addresses, and traffic information.”
If you don’t break the rules then presumably this won’t happen, but it does seem as though SaferVPN is at least capable of logging a lot of data.
The acceptable use policy also raises some issues for us. For example, a very restrictive ‘obscenity’ clause says you must not “upload, post, or otherwise transmit any content which is obscene, indecent, or pornographic, or which is otherwise objectionable.”
Of course, we’re 100% in favor of rules about illegal content, such as child pornography, but extending the rules so far that they could catch almost anyone is more of a problem
7. Pros and Cons
- 24-hour free trial
- 30-day money-back guarantee
- Ample selection of encryption protocols
- Up to 5 simultaneous connections
- Broad server coverage
- Unblocks BBC iPlayer
- 24/7 live chat support
- Kill switch
- Global server coverage needs improvement
- Customization features are a bit lacking
- Session logging
- Israeli jurisdiction
- No P2P allowed
- No Netflix US
SaferVPN offers high connection speeds, strong encryption, and excellent customer service.
Having quite a number of servers in almost 35 countries, SaferVPN has a large network and works on all major devices.
Also including their free trial, money-back guarantee, and reliable access to Netflix and Hulu, there is practically no understandable reason to turn down this VPN.
At this point I will wrap up the post for today on SaferVPN Review
