1. About PureVPN Review
PureVPN’s journey began on a cold November morning when an experiment on personal VPN service turned out to be a resounding success.
It was created with the sole aim of keeping online privacy safe, intact and to offer absolute internet freedom.
The company does this so you can browse the internet without any fear. And, they claim that no one does it better than them “Pure VPN”.
We can as well tell you that they can boost of 2,000+ servers, 140+ countries, 180+locations and 3 million-plus satisfied users later, today, PureVPN stands tall because it is the only VPN provider with an arsenal of enterprise-grade security measures to combat the worst of threats and carries with it the simplest of reputations.
Streaming – Does PureVPN Work with Netflix?
- Streaming – Does PureVPN Work with Netflix?Netflix US: Yes
- Hulu: Yes
- HBO GO: Yes
- BBC iPlayer: Yes
Yes, this VPN can unblock most popular streaming sites, including Netflix US. Unfortunately, my connection was sluggish, although I was able to stream Netflix, Hulu, HBO GO, and BBC iPlayer in HD.
For a faster connection and consistent upload and download speeds, check out a VPN with excellent support and servers distributed all over the globe, like ExpressVPN.
The streaming profile of this VPN tries to bring out the best connection for high-speed streaming, but the VPN uses a weaker encryption protocol than its other profiles. When I spoke to the customer support agent, they said they use a weaker encryption protocol because a stronger encryption protocols will slow down your connection.
Which is to say that you can increase your encryption, but your speed will definitely be reduced. Hence, I can’t recommend this, because my speeds was slow already while using the streaming profile, even with the weaker encryption.
PureVPN also operates specialized servers for most popular websites. If there’s a specific website you’d like to unblock, you can search for it on the server-selection page and receive a list of servers that can unblock it.
2. Compatible Devices
PureVPN’s device compatibility is great. Combine with the fact that you can use PureVPN on 5 devices simultaneously, makes it a pretty versatile VPN service.
After we paid for their service, the website still have us download links for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, the browser extensions and so much more. We decided to go for the Windows client, and as it was downloading, a welcome email arrived with login details.
The installer offered to install PureVPN’s proxy extension for Chrome and Firefox, as well as the Windows app, a convenient touch. We accepted the default settings and the app and browser extensions were installed within seconds.
On launching the app, a Windows Security Alert warned us that ‘Windows Defender Firewall has blocked some features of this app.’ we don’t think there’s anything harmful going on (the app is probably just using the firewall to manage its kill switch), but it looks unprofessional, and could leave users concerned about their safety.
Here’s a complete list of devices that PureVPN supports:
- Android TV
- Amazon Firestick
- Microsoft Surface
- Boxee box
- Now TV Box
- Raspberry Pi
- Chrome cast
- Play Station
- iOS App(Relaunched)
3. Features of PureVPN
PureVPN posses a very good feature which makes it amazing. Some of the features which include:
PureVPN WiFi Security
This nifty feature automatically detects when you connect to an unrecognized WiFi network offers to secure your connection by turning on the VPN.
This is an excellent way to make sure you never surf the internet on an insecure WiFi hotspot without the protection of a VPN.
Dedicated IP addresses
One of PureVPN’s biggest strengths is that it’ll unblock almost every streaming service known to man. This services include; BBC iPlayer and Netflix which block IP ranges known to belong to many VPN companies.
PureVPN is able to do this because (slightly confusingly) it offers two forms of “dedicated IP address.” The first ones called IPs temporary, are created to access a specific event or on-line streaming service.
So they are “dedicated” to specific event or service, but are shared among several users.
If you discover a service blocked to VPN users then all you do is to contact PureVPN’s 24/7 Live Chat support and they will virtually be able to provide you with a server IP address that works.
These dedicated personal IPs are also good for getting around blocks which target known VPN IP ranges. Additionally, they are helpful to people who run things like games servers or who wish to access LAN resources that need connecting to a fixed static IP address.
Advanced port forwarding
Like latest VPN services, PureVPN provides a NAT firewall to prevent unsolicited incoming connections.
The problem with NAT firewalls is that, although they are smart for security, but are somewhat depressing if, like P2P torrent-heads, you really wish to have unsolicited incoming connections in order to better facilitate file-sharing.
Port forwarding solves this set back by permitting users to open holes (ports) within the NAT firewall through which incoming connections can pass. In addition to torrenters, this feature is helpful for anyone who needs to access resources like printers, LAN drives, and games or media servers that are behind the VPN.
4. Speed and Performance
Whether you wish to torrent, stream, or simply browse, it’s crucial that your VPN provides high-speed connections.
It’s traditional to experience some speed loss as a result of the long distance your data has to travel to reach the VPN server. However, the difference should slightly be noticeable with a premium VPN.
When determining the speed of an internet connection, we measure three things:
- The download speed is the rate at which you can pull data from a server to your device. The higher this number is, the faster your internet connection will be. This is measured in megabits per second (Mbps).
- The upload speed is how quickly you can send data from your device to others. The higher this number is, the faster you’ll be able to send files and upload data. This is also measured in megabits per second (Mbps).
- The ping is how long it takes your connection to respond after you’ve sent a request. The lower this number is, the faster your connection will be. This is measured in milliseconds (ms).
During my analysis of PureVPN, I measured my speed while connected to a local server and to a server in the US. It is usually assumed that connection times to a local server are faster, which is so because the data has less distance to travel.
5. Price (Free or Paid version)
PureVPN allows three options for subscription which are; one month, three months, or yearly. Longer plans gives you a better overall deal, and offers the largest discount.
You can choose among a wide variety of payment methods, including credit cards, PayPal, Alipay, Paymentwall, and BlueSnap. You can also use CoinPayments and gift cards, but these options are nonrefundable.
6. Privacy and Security
PureVPN is based in Hong Kong, which despite being governed by China enjoys some of the freest and uncensored internet access in the world.
VPN providers in Hong Kong are not allowed to store any form of logs, not until recently, where PureVPN kept an extensive connection logs, which was used by the FBI to help catch one of its users.
A “bare minimum set of data is required to help you with technical assistance, solving connecting problems, and overcoming region-specific problems,” excluding the IP address which you are connecting from, the IP address of the VPN server you connect to, and a timestamp of when you connect. This data are not kept.
On the client, different modes likely use different protocols, although IKEv2 and SSTP appear to be the defaults. Read our article on VPN protocol to get more knowledge on it.
When using OpenVPN, PureVPN uses the following settings:
Data channel: an AES-256-CBC cipher with HMAC SHA1 hash authentication.
Control channel: an AES-256-CBC cipher with RSA-2048 handshake encryption and HMAC SHA384 hash authentication. Perfect forward secrecy is provided via a Diffie-Hellman (DHE) key exchange, although we don’t know the key length for this.
This is an extra secure setup that matches or exceeds our minimum recommendations on all points.
8. Pros and Cons
- Surf some restricted websites anonymously
- They have a large amount of servers in many countries.
- PureVPN is easy to use, simple to set up, and secure! What more can you ask for in a product?
- I like how PureVPN supports several VPN protocols, including: IKEv2, L2TP, PPTP, OpenVPN, and SSTP.
- Unblocks Netflix
- Good Customer support
- Good Speed
- The user interface for the apps can be improved.
- It can be difficult to get online sometimes.
- Some countries can detect and block the VPN service.
- I didn’t have access to all websites which isn’t supposed to be so
PureVPN almost all features you need in a premium VPN, but its performance and customer service don’t meet requirement.
The app required more than usual on my computer’s resources, causing my system to slow down and, a sometimes, freeze altogether. The problem resolved immediately I shut the app down.
This is where I will wrap up the post for today on PureVPN Review
